Midland has more than one way into its history. The Permian Basin Petroleum Museum connects geology, technology, art and the energy business that changed the area. Its visitor page says most people spend about two hours there, which makes it a workable first stop rather than an all-day commitment.
For a different view, the Museum of the Southwest combines art galleries, the Turner Mansion, a planetarium and a children's museum on one campus. Choose the Petroleum Museum if you want the Basin's energy story; choose the Museum of the Southwest if your group wants several kinds of exhibits in one visit. Leave room for West Texas outdoors
I-20 Wildlife Preserve offers a quieter contrast to the downtown museums. The City of Midland describes an 86-acre preserve with free admission, trails, bird blinds and a raised boardwalk. It works best as an intentional stop: check the city page for hours, then use the current forecast before walking in heat or wind.
If a preserve walk does not fit your day, the city's parks directory is a better place to pick a playground or a shorter neighborhood stop. Local conditions change faster than an evergreen itinerary, so let the forecast decide the outdoor portion.
Make downtown the flexible finish
